With Other Dances, the Dutch National Ballet brings an ode to abstract dance, in which two recently praised choreographies come together: Ted Brandsen’s The Chairman Dances and David Dawson’s The Four Seasons, which was first performed in the Netherlands during the 2021 Holland Festival.
The title of the piece refers to a choreography that Jerome Robbins created in 1976 for international stars Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Initially the Chopin duet Other Dances was meant to be a one-off piece, but it proved so successful that both the American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet included it in their repertoire that same year.
'This exceptional work isn’t just a wonderful gift for the various pairs of soloists currently in our company - their talent and skills are guaranteed to make it a delightful treat for the audience as well.'
- Ted Brandsen, director the Dutch National Ballet
The performance begins with Ted Brandsen’s The Chairman Dances (2023), to the exhilarating music of the same name by John Adams. Like the composer, Brandsen’s creation alludes to ballroom dance: dressed in transparent, gender-neutral white dresses, the dancers perform a spirited ensemble choreography that at times sees individual dancers break away from the group. The closing act is David Dawson’s The Four Seasons. This choreography, based on Max Richter’s reinterpretation of Antonio Vivaldi, explores the cycles of life through a combination of emotion, lyricism and physical demands.
