Under Construction, the latest work by Geumhyung Jeong (Seoul, 1980), explores the boundaries between human and machine. Jeong builds robot-like figures out of medical dummies, skeleton models and mechanical components that move awkwardly, almost like humans, which results in a strange dance of vulnerability and machinery.
Jeong’s figures aren’t perfect robots, but rather show human limitations, failures, desires, a search for connection. With her background in choreography and a fascination with technology and objects, she will transform the space into a creative studio where the sculptures really come to life. Through video and performance, Jeong will invite the audience into the intimate process of making, maintaining and communicating with her mechanical ‘partners’.
Inspired by her youth in industrial South Korea, Jeong draws attention to the impact of technology and consumption in our everyday lives. Under Construction offers an honest, confronting look at how technology influences us in a world that is all about constant progress.
