The visual performance EXTRA LIFE - with music by Caterina Barbieri, breathtaking lighting design by Yves Godin and actors including the celebrated Adèle Haenel - explores the physical, psychological and imaginary aspects of trauma and recovery. Director, choreographer and past associate artist (2021) Gisèle Vienne (Charleville-Mézières, 1976) continues her study of how we perceive stories and psychological structures.
How do we use our senses during a life-changing experience? The story follows a brother and sister who meet again, twenty years after a traumatic event. As adults, they try to process the experience and become closer. EXTRA LIFE offers an intense visual experience in which past, present and future coalesce. Movement, abstract dance, music, light and lasers make for an emotionally charged performance.
EXTRA LIFE was influenced by philosopher Elsa Dorlin and her essay about self-defence and violence (Se défendre. Une philosophie de la violence, 2017), as well as Vienne’s long-standing collaboration with her performers, which include Katia Petrowick, Theo Livesey and Adèle Haenel. Vienne’s work often explores the ways systems like the patriarchy and capitalism shape our perception. EXTRA LIFE plays with memory and imagination in order to make this process tangible.
'With this work, I am attempting to invent a form in all its visual aspects, one which enables the unfolding of the different permeable strata that constitute this moment: the past, the present, the anticipated future, the construction of memory, the imagination, all of the various layers that form the experience of this present moment and reveal its density and intensity.'
