Claudia Castellucci (Cesena, 1958) has created a tableau vivant about (the gesture of) begging. She took inspiration for this from the paintings of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, a master of poetic imagery from 17th-century Spain.
Murillo, known for his portraits of young beggars - he was a beggar himself once - laid the basis for a genre that would be widely imitated later on. Cheap reproductions became popular and opened up an artform that before mainly catered to elites.
Castellucci’s work, which combines elements of dance, theatre and visual arts, plays with the tension between stasis and movement, between giving and receiving. In Murillo Castelucci explores the power and charge of the begging gesture.
In 2020, Claudia Castellucci was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Dance Biennale. Together with her brother, theatermaker and director Romeo Castellucci (who is also at this years festival with Bérénice), she started the Societas Raffaello Sanzio.
