Takao Kawaguchi (1962, Japan) started his career studying mime, a form of movement theatre based on pantomime. This background formed the basis of his career as an artist. Kawaguchi has worked on a wide range of projects at the intersection of experimental theatre, dance and performance art, in which he used his body as the main medium.
He was part of the renowned Japanese performance collective Dumb Type from 1996 to 2008, and went on to further develop his solo career from 2000 on. Kawaguchi’s work explores the lines between theatre, dance and video and how these disciplines come together under the rubric of 'art'. In recent years, his research and practice focussed on butoh, resulting in The Sick Dancer (2012) and About Kazuo Ohno (2013), the latter of which was nominated for a NYC Bessie Award and is featured at Holland Festival 2025.
Kawaguchi will be at Frascati on 12 and 13 June performing About Kazuo Ohno, while on 13 June Likeminds will host a Late Night with him as part of Welcome To Asbestos Hall. Kawaguchi will also be present on 14 June at The Legacy of Hijikata: Hijikata and future generations.
