In C

Sasha Waltz, Het Nationale Ballet

Copyright information:Hugo Thomassen

Choreographer Sasha Waltz created 53 dance figures that the dancers from her company Sasha Waltz & Guests could experiment with at home, during the COVID lockdowns. In C creates a new language, one that can be taught to anyone, irrespective of age or culture. The ballet performance was inspired by Terry Riley’s minimalist composition In C from 1964 and playfully balances improvisation and choreography.

'Each performance is different, and each dancer is at the same time a choreographer.'

- Sasha Waltz

In C begins with a distinct beat, like a pulse connecting everyone, dancers and audience alike. Each individual performer has creative freedom but must also be attuned to the group. It’s an explicit allusion to our society; Waltz (Kalrsruhe, 1963) asks: how might we preserve our personal freedom without harming others and society?

Thanks to digital platforms and growing involvement from dancers throughout the world, In C spread from Berlin to Ukraine, Mexico, New York and beyond since its Berlin premiere. Waltz was previously at the Holland Festival with Korper (2000), Dido & Aeneas (2006) and Medea (2009).
