The Head & The Load
William Kentridge, Philip Miller, Thuthuka Sibisi, Gregory Maqoma
At the initiative of festival director Annet Lekkerkerker, 2019 saw the Holland Festival for the first time collaborating with associate artists to showcase (new) work and invite artists who inspire them. 2019’s associate artists were the South African artist William Kentridge and Congolese choreographer and storyteller Faustin Linyekula. Kentridge took care of the opening evening, while Linyekula brought his work to the theatre, but also to the streets in Amsterdam’s South East district. Another cornerstone of the festival was German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, with the performance of his three-day marathon piece aus LICHT, the largest production ever at the Holland Festival, in collaboration with Stockhausen-Stiftung für Musik, the Royal Conservatoire The Hague and of course the Dutch National Opera.

Welcome to the Holland Festival archive! The history of our festival dates back to 1947. Through the programs of each festival edition we aim to tell this history here. Currently our archive has been digitised from 1990 onwards, more history is to follow soon. Sadly some information is only available in Dutch but we aim to be as bilingual as possible. For additions or tips send an email to [email protected].
