Helikopter-Streichquartett
Karlheinz Stockhausen, Arditti String Quartet, The Grasshoppers Show Team
Fifty years after the Allied liberation, there was little cause for optimism: major conflicts and genocides raged both within and outside of Europe. Against this backdrop, 1995 saw the Holland Festival take Art and Resistance as its theme, programming work like Schönberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw and Kurtág’s Songs of Despair and Sorrow.
The festival also featured a retrospective on Pina Bausch’s work, but most spectacular was likely the performance of Stockhausen’s Helikopter Streichquartett, in which the members of the Arditti String Quartet were in a helicopter with Stockhausen mixing the sound of the propellers with the music of the four string instruments.

Welcome to the Holland Festival archive! The history of our festival dates back to 1947. Through the programs of each festival edition we aim to tell this history here. Currently our archive has been digitised from 1990 onwards, more history is to follow soon. Sadly some information is only available in Dutch but we aim to be as bilingual as possible. For additions or tips send an email to [email protected].
