Naar aanleiding van zijn honderdste geboortedag vond er in het Muziekgebouw een John Cage-weekend plaats.

Kunst en de kunstenaar staan altijd centraal in het Holland Festival, maar deze editie werd gedomineerd door (auto-)biografische elementen van de kunstenaars zélf in hun performances. The Life & Death of Marina Abramović waarin we naar Abramović kijken door de ogen van Robert Wilson was daar een goed voorbeeld van. Daarnaast was er aandacht voor de honderdste geboortedag van John Cage en werd een aantal van zijn belangrijke theatrale werken opgevoerd. Literaire inspiratie voor producties kwam onder meer van Shakespeare, Jonathan Littell en Robert Musil.
