Tradition as a source of renewal was the festival’s common thread in 2010. The festival opened at the Carré theatre with a homage to Egyptian diva Oum Kalthoum by Amal Maher. Starchitect Zaha Hadid designed a pavilion for Bach’s music, while Boris Charmatz and Jérome Bel presented a three-piece devoted to Merce Cunningham, one of the all-time greatest choreographers. A Japanese Noh performance was the fourth in a series of traditional Japanese theatre forms. Shakespeare’s The Tempest, directed by Sam Mendes, went side by side with current-day contributions like that of Pieter Stein and Simon McBurney, whose A Dog’s Heart, composed by Alexander Raskatov, had its world premiere during the Holland Festival.

Welcome to the Holland Festival archive! The history of our festival dates back to 1947. Through the programs of each festival edition we aim to tell this history here. Currently our archive has been digitised from 1990 onwards, more history is to follow soon. Sadly some information is only available in Dutch but we aim to be as bilingual as possible. For additions or tips send an email to [email protected].
