One Ocean

Artists from islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans bring an ode to resilience, culture and the ecological vulnerability of their habitat. Live music and film footage interweave traditions and generations into a total artwork. 

One Ocean is an impressive experience that makes tangible the effects of the climate crisis threatening this island group. An ensemble of international artists will bring the musical traditions of the islands to life - in their own languages, and with instruments that were formed interacting with nature across generations.

This exceptional company comprises artists from all over the world. Sammy (Madagaskar) is a singer and former leader and artistic director of the internationally successful band Tarika Sammy, proclaimed one of the top ten best bands worldwide by TIME Magazine. Abus Tanapima (Taiwan), at the forefront of a movement of young indigenous artists proudly singing out their indigenous languages from international stages. The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Yoyo Tuki (Rapa Nui) mixes reggae, folk and funk with the wisdom of his ancestors and refined Polynesian ukulele techniques.

These artists, together with their colleagues, don’t just bring their musical heritage to life, but are also committed to change. For instance, Emlyn (Mauritius), songwriter, musician and dancer, is leading a new wave of artists from the Indian Ocean islands rediscovering their musical roots. She herself does this with thoughtful Creole lyrics and a passion for protecting her island, both onstage and through an organisation ‘Enn Losean Vivab’ she’s a part of, which fights against plastic pollution.
