Opera singers draped in historical costumes sing arias from the historical European repertory over one another. At the same time, opera extracts are played on a piano while there’s more classical opera coming from long play discs. In a nutshell this sums up Europera 3 and 4, the middle parts of the Europeras series, which John Cage created in the last few years of his life. In the Holland Festival they will be performed under the young Greek/German director Elena Tzavara. Europera 3 is a multi-layered, tumultuous work, whereas Europera 4 might best be described as a sublime, intimate experience. Each part being the flipside of the other, Cage insisted they should always be performed together. Cage himself said about the series: ‘For two hundred years the Europeans have been sending us their operas. Now I’m sending them back.’
