John Cage made his mark not only as a composer, but also as a writer, poet and speaker. He gave many lectures throughout his career, the most famous probably being his 1959 Lecture on Nothing. Cage’s talks were characterised by a combination of humour, intelligence, anecdotes and a sometimes absurd frivolousness, often hiding great philosophical views. He would often structure his texts as musical compositions, with a strict time structure, changes of tempo, silences and repetitions. The Holland Festival has asked Dutch composer and poet Micha Hamel, whose music is put under the spotlight at this year’s festival, to deliver a lecture within this tradition. So expect no musicological exposition, but a modern, personal talk in the spirit of John Cage.
