Gary Lucas, the ‘thinking man’s guitar hero’, presents an ode to Chinese pop from the thirties with The Edge of Heaven. The genre combines Western swing, jazz and Tin Pan Alley pop styles with Chinese influences. The music has recently found a resurgence in popular interest, partly thanks to the soundtracks of films such as Shanghai Triad and In the Mood For Love. Lucas, known for his collaborations with the likes of Jeff Buckley, Captain Beefheart and Nick Cave, adds his bluesy guitars to the lush Chinese melodies to produce songs that have the ring of standards. Popular singers Sally Kwok and Mo Hai Jin will join Lucas in the Bimhuis.
