the latest project by Trajal Harrell

I want to show weakness as a fundamental quality that unites all human beings.’

- Trajal Harrell

At Holland Festival 2025, we wish to present associate artist Trajal Harrell’s latest project Welcome to Asbestos Hall, an exceptional and ambitious production for which we could use your support.

Please help and donate now!

Since 2013, American choreographer Harrell has explored the relationship between modern dance and butoh, a post-war Japanese dance form developed by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. He is set to conclude this study with a large and daring project: Welcome to Asbestos Hall

In 1962, Hijikata formed the original Asbestos Hall in Tokyo, a legendary meeting place for avant-garde artists. Now, Harrell is bringing the spirit of Asbestos Hall to life once more. Together with his dancers, designers and musicians, he will transform the Likeminds location in Amsterdam North into a dynamic, creative space for experimentation, rehearsal and presentation.

During the day, Harrell and his dancers will work on choreographic material, which will be presented to audiences in the evening. Visitors are welcome at Likeminds from Tuesday through Sunday during the day, in the evening and at night. Besides the presentation of Harrell’s work, there’s always something going on: from workshops and discussions to performances by guest artists, films, book presentations, pop-up events and house DJs. Everything comes together in Amsterdam’s summer season.

Welcome to Asbestos Hall is a unique way of getting to know Trajal Harrell’s work at an early stage of development before it has the form of a performance piece.’

Support Welcome to Asbestos Hall

We intend to present Welcome to Asbestos Hall for 16 days in June at Likeminds. In order to realise this exceptional project, we need your help. It costs a lot of money to present an exciting programme that can be visited by day, during the evening and at night throughout much of the festival.

Your contribution will aid us in several areas, including:

· purchasing a special floor for a guest performance;

· purchasing additional theatre lighting and sound equipment;

· setting up an online ad campaign for increasing reach and drawing visitors;

· making admission prices as accessible as possible and ensuring people of all means and backgrounds can visit Welcome to Asbestos Hall.

Please make your donation now and help us open the doors of Welcome to Asbestos Hall during the festival!
