How do hidden traumas from the past continue to influence the present? Grandpa Puss; or how God disappeared is a family epic that spans three generations from the perspective of a young girl.
The Flemish director Lisaboa Houbrechts elaborates the fictional story in visuals, text and music. Houbrechts: It is a dark tale. It opens wounds and sewers. It is about how children are trapped in a chain of violence. The urge to break that chain can release a tremendous life force and imagination, but it can also implode into a cycle of destruction.’
A twelve-year-old ‘Granddaughter of All Granddaughters’ finds herself at the end of a long history. She looks back into the past of her grandfather on her father’s side of the family: Grandpa Puss. His childhood, the war, the sexual abuse in the fraternity school, the German occupation and the cruel marriage with Grandma Puss. The piece dives into the life stories and traumas of grandparents, parents and current generations, with an important role for Bach’s St John Passion.
The director explores how the small and grand, the intimate and socio-political, and the past and present are intertwined. For this ambitious piece, she is working with actors, singers and musicians of all ages, including the actress Elsie de Brauw and accordionist Philippe Thuriot.

In conversation with Lisaboa Houbrechts
The idea for Vake Poes; of hoe God verdween (Grandpa Puss; or how God disappeared) came about during the conversations that director and writer Lisaboa Houbrechts had with her grandfather. He would talk to her about his youth when she was still a child. Houbrechts: ‘It felt as if I were at play in his imagination’. As an adult, she looks at his stories, in which the war also plays a major role, with different eyes. She was greatly moved by her grandfather, who she feels ‘relates his history like a child.’
