Artists in conversation about identity and representation
Artists will be talking about identity and representation together and with the audience: is it all fair game for anyone to tell any story? What about possible ethical objections that surface as a result of changing societal relationships?
Director Nicolas Stemann based Contre-enquêtes on the novel The Meursault Investigation by Kamel Daoud. For his book, Daoud chose the wholly absent perspective of the anonymous Arab who is killed in Albert Camus’ The Stranger. While making the piece, Stemann wondered: ‘Who are we to tell this story? Who can play these characters?’
Various pieces at the Holland Festival will highlight perspectives that are rarely or not at all heard in literature and history. For Who’s talking?, writers and artists like Kamel Daoud and the Dutch writer and actress Nazmiye Oral will gather to talk about the importance of representation and the corresponding do’s and don’ts, led by moderator Yoeri Albrecht.
