35 years ago, marking violinist Gidon Kremer’s 30th birthday, the Estonian capital Tallinn played host to a special concert featuring Arvo Pärt’s Tabula rasa and Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto Grosso n0. 1. Now, once again, these two milestones in contemporary music are performed together in one single concert. The historical programme, featuring top young musicians as soloists, is complemented by a brand new commentary from the leading Estonian composer Toivo Tulev, who attended the concert in 1977. Pärt’s Tabula rasa is regarded as anhighlight of Holy Minimalism. Schnittke’s Concerto is a scintillating set of contradictions and paradoxes, which propels us from Vivaldi into total dissonance, and from the 18th century Viennese Classics into 20th century twelve-tone technique.
