The world famous Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela will be making its first appearance in the Netherlands. The more than 150 strong orchestra is the jewel in the crown of the Venezuelan music programme known as El Sistema, comprising 125 youth orchestras and 250 000 pupils. Under the baton of the charismatic chief conductor Gustavo Dudamel – himself an alumnus of El Sistema – the orchestra will play Esteban Benzecry’s Rituales Amerindios and Richard Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie. The three parts in Rituales Amerindios refer to nature gods of the Maya, Inca and Aztecs. Nature also features prominently in Eine Alpensinfonie. Strauss’ piece portrays a mountain climb, moving from an arduous ascent to a magnificent summit view, followed by thunder, lightning and a perilous descent.
