At this year’s Holland Festival Berlin’s Mahler Chamber Orchestra will play a modern programme with a classical twist. Under the direction of the up-and-coming Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado the orchestra will play four works by three 20th century Russian composers, all four of which refer to 18th century Vienna. The programme consists of Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, Schnittke’s Moz-Art à la Haydn, and two compositions by Shostakovich: his Ninth Symphony and his First Cello Concerto. The latter is notorious for its difficulty and will be played by the young American cellist Alisa Weilerstein.
