Isabelle Huppert is Blanche DuBois in Un Tramway, a new production based on the American stage classic A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. Director Krzysztof Warlikowski, who is at the forefront of a new generation of Polish theatre makers, radically sets the drama in the present, in order to examine what Williams’ themes of sex, desire, death and madness mean today. Huppert plays a decidely modern Blanche DuBois, who has a passion for the arts, but has failed in the art of life. Brilliantly, the frail French woman switches between reality and fantasy, between hysterical outbursts and painful silence, sharing with the audience her agony and unbearable desire.
