In his own country Senegal Thione Seck is a big name, on a footing with Youssou N’dour and Baaba Maal. He is one of the founders of mbalax, the popular dance music of Senegal and Gambia that evolved in the seventies. In the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ Seck will play a fascinating mix of mbalax and Eastern music from India and the Arab world, as featured on his cd Orientation. Produced and arranged by François Bréant, the album was nominated for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Album of the Year Award. This is the first time that Seck has toured with this material, and is a Dutch premiere for the Holland Festival.
