After Gatz and The Sound and the Fury (April Seventh, 1928), Elevator Repair Service visit the Holland Festival with their third adaptation of a classic American novel. The Select (The Sun Also Rises) is the New York company’s inventive stage production of The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway’s novel about the Lost Generation. American correspondent Jake Barnes has been made impotent due to a war wound. With painful fatalism he witnesses how Lady Brett Ashley, the woman he loves, indulges in sexual adventures with other men. When Jake, Brett and their expat friends drift from the Paris bistros to the bullfights and the fiesta in Pamplona, their hidden desires and frustrations come to a head, and Jake finds that even love cannot conquer the trauma of the war.
