Gossip is elevated to the status of art in Richard Sheridan’s The School for Scandal, one of the classics of English comedy, and according to many still unsurpassed in its genre. With a satirical bite as venomous as Molière’s and as quick as Wilde’s, Sheridan treats us to a high-spirited lampoon of 18th century social mores in London society. After Readings (Holland Festival 2007) and Happy Days (Holland Festival 2008) renowned British director Deborah Warner takes a very different turn with this production. According to Warner, The School for Scandal offers glorious opportunities, and is ripe for a revival in our contemporary times, dealing as it does with a society obsessed with fashion, wit and reputation.
