Ruben Van Leer

Profile

Ruben van Leer (1984, Amsterdam) makes award winning films & interdisciplinary works, driven by the interest for movement, embodied experiences and future sciences. Coming from a musical family and working with contemporary disciplines in film and theatre from an early age, the time based arts are engraved in Van Leer’s DNA. Not limited to the confines of cinema, dance, music, digital art, avant-garde and popculture, his practices aim to go beyond crossing genres connecting audiences from different backgrounds around the world. Van Leer started his career as a visuals & music video director for bands e.g. Coldplay, The Black Eyed Peas and Yeasayer. For the past years Van Leer collaborated with Tigran Hamasyan creating several music films e.g. Cave of Rebirth (2017) and live show Shadow Theater (2014) at Cité de la Musique in Paris. Van Leer wrote and directed dance-opera film Symmetry (2016) streamed on AppleTV. He did the scenography for a series of digital and live stage operas commissioned by the Holland Festival and Ballet National De Marseille, including Sacred Environment (2017), Non Solo Medea (2018), I know... (2019) and Disappearance (2022). Recently he created a buzz with his short sci-fi film Power of Water (2021) for Eurovision global broadcast and directed the immersive music theatre piece Sound of Light (2023) in collaboration with saxophonist Ben Wendel.
