The Holland Festival continues its travels through the landscape of Far Eastern traditional theatre. The Jade Hairpin is a romantic love story written in ancient China, during the Ming dynasty. This classical work by Gao Lian (1527-1609) tells the story of a young student who falls in love with a young novice. The story is told according to the laws of Kunqu, also known as ‘the mother of Chinese theatre’. You can expect a detailed and precisely choreographed synthesis of drama, farce, opera, ballet, poetry and music. Featuring Wei Chunrong, winner of China’s Meihua Prize and acknowledged by unesco for her contribution in promoting Kunqu.
