Jos van Kan

Profile

Jos van Kan is a Dutch director of drama, music theatre and opera. He made his debut in 1987 and has worked with Artemis, De Wetten van Kepler, Het Zuidelijk Toneel, Oostpool and the Zeeland Nazomer Festival, among others. From 1995 to 2003, he was artistic director of the music theatre company Maccus. Van Kan has directed regularly in Germany since 1994; in Osnabrück he staged Maria Goos' Cloaca and Oscar Wilde's The importance of being Earnest, among others. And this winter he will make his debut at the Staatstheater Braunschweig. In Taiwan, he directed Marlin Helder's chamber opera The second goodbye, which was also seen at festivals in Beijing and Shanghai. In 2013, he will direct a music theatre performance with traditional Khmer musicians in Cambodia for the second time. Van Kan works regularly at Tryater, where he will create a new show in 2014 in collaboration with the Ceramics Museum De Princessehof. He has directed classical works such as Purcell's King Arthur (the opening performance of the Holland Festival in 1999) and Stravinsky's Histoire du Soldat. He also regularly directs new compositions, most recently a new chamber opera by Indian composer Param Vir. With the Ives Ensemble, in addition to works by Feldman and Sciarrino, among others, he staged two works by Richard Rijnvos: Mappamondo, a music theatre performance that was performed at last year's ZaterdagMatinee, and Die Kammersängerin, which was performed at the 2011 Holland Festival.
