The Russian filmmaker Dziga Vertov (1896-1954) was one of the pioneers of documentary films. His most famous silent work Chelovek s kinoapparat (‘Man with a Movie Camera’) shows a day in the life of an industrial city in Russia. Associate artist William Kentridge calls Vertov one of his most important sources of inspiration. ‘He showed me how you could make a film that was not a narrative, not an essay, but that still has a coherence.’
