Dutch conductor, pianist and composer Reinbert de Leeuw plays a recital consisting of works by the French composer Erik Satie, written in the period between 1891 and 1894. The programme is based around an instrumental version of Satie’s seldomly performed work Uspud, a bizarre ‘christian ballet in three acts’, featuring a host of ghostly appearances, like the Church, saints, martyrs, demons and Christ on the cross. The ballet has the crucifixion as its central theme. In his own inimitable way Satie has managed to link mystical and satirical elements. The performance is supported by lighting design and video by Arjen Klerkx. As well as Uspud, de Leeuw will play four other works from Satie’s esoteric period.
