Cinetree x Holland Festival: Manifesto

Together with online film platform Cinetree, the Holland Festival is showing a series of films with thematic connections to the festival's performances and creators.The series kicks off with a one-time screening of Manifesto by Berlin artist Julian Rosefeldt.

Can art change the world? There is a growing cry for change throughout society. At one time manifestos were considered the more popular way to present new ideas. Julian Rosefeldt shows that they are still essential in this day and age. In his film installation Manifesto, scintillating, angry and remarkably current sounding texts from famous artist manifestos are the basis of thirteen short films screened in parallel – with older and more recent texts by artists such as André Breton, Kazimir Malevich, Sol LeWitt and Jim Jarmusch, amongst others. The texts are spoken by thirteen different personalities including a teacher, a factory worker, a punk and a newsreader - all thirteen(!) roles played by actress Cate Blanchett. Rosefeldt and Blanchett create fascinating worlds, placing the texts in an unexpectedly contemporary context. In 2017 Manifesto was presented as a film installation - shown simultaneously on multiple screens - it was a highlight of the Holland Festival.

This screening will be preceded by an introduction and will end with a discussion.

This year Rosefeldt's new work Euphoria is shown as a film installation in the Central Market Hall during the festival.
