On 6 June 2014 it will have been 75 years since Emanuel Boekman defended his thesis Government and Art in the Netherlands at the University of Amsterdam. In 1989, on the 50th anniversary of his study, the Boekmanlezing (Boekman lecture) was inaugurated to monitor contemporary developments in arts policy. In this Boekman lecture, the departing director of the Boekman Foundation Cas Smithuijsen will reflect on the conditions required for Dutch artists to keep pace with the best creative talent on the world stage. Smithuijsen will focus on music, as 6 June 2014 also happens to be the 75th birthday of Dutch composer Louis Andriessen – who was born on the day Boekman received his doctorate. Ensemble Klang will perform work by Andriessen and his student Kate Moore.
