Ancient Evenings, an ongoing project by Matthew Barney and Jonathan Bepler, is an operatic work consisting of site-specific live performance, music, sculpture, and film. Loosely based on Norman Mailer’s novel of the same name, its seven-act structure reflects the seven stages of the soul, according to Egyptian mythology. As part of a Holland Festival/Stedelijk Museum residency in Amsterdam, Barney and Bepler will develop several live musical and narrative ideas relating to the remaining acts of Ancient Evenings, to be presented in New York City later this year. The residency will culminate in an informal workshop featuring an international cast of performers, actors, and vocalists; selected scenes from the larger film in progress will also be shown.
