‘The subjugation of women and the earth is one and the same’, ‘Relieve men of their roles as protectors and predators’ and ’The Future is Female’ these are but three of the 13 tenets that associate artist ANOHNI formulated together with a group of artists, after much thought and discussion about feminism. The statements are engraved in rose quartz disks and exhibited in a circle, as a powerful source of inspiration and as a recipe for change.

Five North-American artists came together in 2014 to stage their first combined exhibition at a downtown gallery in New York, called ‘Future Feminism’: ANOHNI, Kembra Pfahler, Johanna Constantine, and Bianca and Sierra Casady of CocoRosie. From their many meetings and brainstorms, thirteen propositions emerged, which were then engraved into rose quartz discs. These sculptures, exhibited in a circle, also set the stage for a weekend program around the theme of Future Feminism.

‘The Future Feminism project started as a circle of friends in 2011. We wanted to have a deeper conversation about our thoughts and feelings about our experiences as women and trans femmes in the world. This was before the #MeToo movement, and before Trump, and the most recent wave of anti-abortion fundamentalism. It felt unfashionable to use the word ‘feminism’. We spent many hours together, sitting in a circle and slowly building consensus amongst ourselves… (...) We called it “Future Feminism” because we were concerned about the future. We came up with thirteen ideas that we carved into round rose quartz discs.’
