The phenomenal international theatre hit War Horse is playing at the theatre Carré with an all-Dutch cast. War Horse recounts the powerfully moving story of a boy and his horse, against the backdrop of the First World War. When Albert’s horse Joey is sold to be sent into battle, he follows him and risks his life in the hope they will once again be reunited.

In the midst of the thrilling action on the battlefield, the life-size horses, developed by the famous Handspring Puppet Company, take the limelight. Brought to life on stage by the incomparable puppeteers, you would swear they were made of flesh and blood: noble animals which win our hearts and make us realize the madness of war.

The remarkable story of War Horse is based on the novel by British author Michael Morpurgo, adapted by Nick Stafford and created in association with the Handspring Puppet Company. Since its premiere in London in 2007 War Horse has attracted over 5 million visitors worldwide. The show has entered its seventh season of sold-out performances in London's West End, it's been touring Great-Britain and Ireland, has embarked on an extensive US tour and has recently opened a new production in Berlin. The Broadway production has won five Tony Awards.

At the outbreak of World War I, Joey, the beloved horse of the young boy Albert, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. The horse is soon caught up in the war, taking him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and still not old enough to enlist in the British Army, he embarks on a dangerous mission to find the horse and bring him back home. A remarkable story about courage, loyalty and friendship, War Horse features groundbreaking puppetry by the South-African Handspring Puppet Company, which bring the horses to life on stage.

War Horse was originally directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, the set design is by Rae Smith, lighting design by Paule Constable and horse choreography by Toby Sedgwick. The puppeteers are Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler, videos design is by 59 Productions Ltd., song lyrics by John Tams, music by Adrian Sutton and sound design by Christopher Shutt. The translation for the Dutch version is by Tom Kleijn.

War Horse will run until the end of September at Carré and will subsequently tour five theatres in the Netherlands until April 2015.
