Luigi Nono’s opera Intolleranza 1960 was a political statement against racism, intolerance and state violence. Starting from this piece of enlightened European cultural history, Christoph Schlingensief asks whether we are only riding yet anotherhumanist hobbyhorse when we deal with the question of ‘intolerance in Africa’. Whether it’s merely another way of diverting away from our own intolerance and legitimizing our ethnocentric thinking. What would a German-African alliance produce if you strip it from its ideology of foreign aid and its sentimentality? With Via Intolleranza 11, Schlingensief designs a scenario full of paradoxes for the utopian union of North and South, consciously ignoring any possible failures. The piece is performed by artists from Burkina Faso and Europe.
