Now, for a limited time, you can watch this extraordinary concert as video on demand.

What do rappers like Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and Joey Bada$$ have in common? They all sampled tracks from the Brazilian music legend Arthur Verocai. His iconic self-titled 1972 album Arthur Verocai, runs at just 29 minutes, yet it grew out to be a beloved classic, inspiring a new generation of artists with its unique sound. In June 2024, Verocai performed at the sold-out Concertgebouw as part of the Holland Festival, accompanied by the Metropole Orkest and artists he influenced, including Rogê and Paula Santoro.

"The word 'legend' is thrown around too casually in concert promos, but the Holland Festival rightly uses it to describe Arthur Verocai."

— Freek Dijkstra, Trouw ★★★★

Verocai’s 1972 record is a blend of musical influences, capturing the vibrant soundscape of 1970s Brazil. It weaves together strings, guitars, pianos, breakbeats, basslines, synthesizers, vocals, saxophones, and percussion, seamlessly combining bossa nova, samba, jazz, MPB, psychedelia, and funk.

Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, the album was entirely produced, arranged, and directed by Verocai himself, bringing together some of Brazil’s greatest talents: vocalists Célia, Carlos Dafe, and Oberdan (from Banda Black Rio), percussionist Pedro Santos, and saxophonist Paulo Moura. Verocai’s work transcends Brazilian music, inspiring artists worldwide. It has been widely sampled by hip-hop artists like MF Doom, Ludacris, Common, Little Brother, and Action Bronson, cementing his cult status.

At The Concertgebouw, Verocai conducted the Metropole Orkest, joined by guest artists he has inspired, including Brazilian singer and guitarist Rogê.
