Selim Doğru

Profile

The composer Selim Doğru (1971) grew up in Istanbul amongst Turkish, Greek, Armenian and Jewish neighbours and cultures. This multicultural richness is reflected in his compositions, in which crossovers of classical and contemporary music, Baroque, world music, electronics, hand organ and all possible combinations of the above play a great role. Doğru studied piano at the Marmara University in his birthplace. At the Utrecht School of the Arts and later at the Conservatory in Rotterdam, he completed his studies in classical and electronic composition. His works are performed in the Netherlands and abroad in all sorts of musical settings, from symphony orchestras to Gypsy bands.

Doğru has developed a multidisciplinary manner of working; the integration of music, poetry, dance and multimedia first resulted in the multimedia production Metamorfose. Since then, he has continued this approach in various other works, including Medcezir, with the Axyz Ensemble and musicians from Turkey, and Mensen Landschappen, performed by Trio To Be Sung. In addition, Doğru has written a lot of work for music theatre productions and mine and dance productions. Selim Doğru founded the reART collective in order to further develop his multidisciplinary and multicultural vision, and to search for new artistic forms and connections between disciplines, cultures and social developments.
