Pichet Klunchun
Profile
Pichet Klunchun (1971, Thailand) is a dancer and choreographer. He started studying traditional Thai dance called khon at age sixteen with the renowned master Chaiyot Khummanee. He eventually received a degree in Thai Classical Dance at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Continuing his learnings, he went on to study dance in the United States where he was exposed to modern and other forms of dance. These new experiences inspired him to re-imagine the traditional understanding of khon, in turn breathing a new life into this traditional dance and bringing it to the forefront of the international stage.
A well-decorated artist, Klunchun received in 2006 the Silpathorn Award from the Ministry of Culture of Thailand, in 2008, the European Cultural Foundation's Princess Margriet Award for Cultural Diversity, and a John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award from the Asian Cultural Council in 2014. He was also appointed Chevalier of the French Arts and Literature Order in 2012.
