Nya is the first performance to come out of a long term project set up by famous French choreographer Abou Lagraa, with the aim to build a bridge between North and South, between mainstream and subculture. Ten talented Algerians bring us their exciting mix of hip hop and contemporary dance. They were chosen by Lagraa from hundreds of Algerian b-boys who auditioned and now form their own contemporary dance troupe within the Algerian National Ballet. In the first section of this double bill they present a spirited Boléro by Ravel, blended with sound effects from the big city. The second part is gentler, with a beautifully fluid and harmonious dance to Houria Aïchi’s Algerian songs.
