Klangforum Wien

Profile

Few ensembles for contemporary music can boast of a track record - and reputation - like that of Klangforum Wien. At any rate, the composition of the ensemble is an accurate reflection of what it stands for: virtuosic playing, aural perceptiveness[M1] , but above all an open mind. For each project, the twenty-five musicians from thirteen countries are equally driven to explore new horizons and unknown sound worlds. Which they do together with the leading composers of our time, always seeking new forms of expression and new audiences. Each year Klangforum Wien commissions composers throughout the world to write a piece. Since its founding in 1985 by Beat Furrer, the ensemble has some six hundred world premieres to its name and has performed in Europe, America and Asia. Peter Paul Kainrath is Klangforum Wien’s current artistic director. The musicians as a collective have been affiliated with Kunstuniversität Graz since 2009, where they teach young people playing techniques and the performance practice of contemporary music in general.
