Jérôme Bel
Profile
Jérôme Bel (1964) is a French choreographer whose early work in the 1990s explored the theatricality of the smallest gesture: every appearance or movement was worthwhile for what it literally was, making the stage a place of attentive and evocative observation, free from spectacle. His work contributed to the development of European conceptual dance, and his pieces are invariably open to subjects that ordinarily have no place in theatre. These pieces later became documentaries: Véronique Doisneau (2004), commissioned by the Paris Opera, sees a ballet dancer recount her experience in the institution. For Disabled Theater, he invited disabled actors from the Zurich Theater Hora to share their dances and stories. Since 2019, and for ecological reasons, Jérôme Bel has re-examined his production and distribution practices, in particular by no longer travelling by plane.
