Night in Melkweg with the best female African artists

Holland Festival and Melkweg present four current-day African rap acts: Sho Madjozi from South Africa, Aunty Rayzor from Nigeria, Def Maa Maa Def from Senegal and the Ghanaian-Dutch Nana Fofie.

In the old hall of Melkweg, we will be featuring the South African singer, rapper, actress and poet Sho Madjozi. In her energetic, rhythmic music, she embraces the Tsonga culture from her home country with elements from Gqom and Afropop, aided by her expressive taste for fashion.

Besides this, we have a quick addition to the line-up in Aunty Rayzor. With her razor sharp beats with influences from Afrobeat and Afro House, this young rapper performs in English and in her mother tongue of Yoruba. She made a name for herself before as ‘Naija Thugress’ in the Nigerian underground, and now she is ready to share her music with Amsterdam. With the elegance of Erykah Badu and as fierce as Missy Elliot, she is certainly one to look out for.

Def Maa Maa Def is a thrilling musical encounter between two stars from the Senegalese hip-hop scene: Mama Victory and Defa. A collaboration that has shaken up Dakar’s music scene. The themes and melodies of their songs are rooted in Senegalese culture and history. At the same time, the duo is open to international influences. You can expect dynamic hip-hop, a kick ass-attitude and a high-paced live show.

The Ghanaian-Dutch singer-songwriter Nana Fofie takes inspiration from both European and African influences. She broke through with covers and mash-ups, like the Afro mash-up hit Mad Over You, which has over six million views. She is just as compelling live. She describes her unique sound as a mix of old-school R&B and Afro Blues.
