Donald Richie

Profile

Donald Richie (1924, USA - 2013, Japan) was an American author who wrote about the Japanese people, Japanese culture, and particularly Japanese cinema.

Although he considered himself primarily a film historian, Richie also directed a number of experimental films, the first of which when he was seventeen. He spent most of his life in Japan, and his books —such as The Japanese Film, The Films of Akira Kurosawa, and Ozu: His Life and Films—are widely credited with introducing American audiences to the world of Japanese cinema.
