Tom Lanoye’s De Russen! combines Chekhov’s early works Ivanov and Platonov to create a black comedy for our times. Ivo van Hove directs a kaleidoscopic performance full of dark humour and searing social criticism, a portrait of a group of people who out of a feeling of loss and displacement lash out, searching for scapegoats and venting their frustrations. The eighteen characters clash, make each other’s lives miserable and burn out in a Chekhov play in which melancholy has been supplanted by resentment and anger. A marathon performance that grips you from beginning to end, with nearly the whole of the company of Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
