Born in New York in 1949, David Moss is regarded as one of the most innovative singers and percussionists in contemporary music. His expansive vocal prowess, spanning four and a half octaves, and his huge reach in vocal sounds and characterisation have earned him the epithet 'unique and powerful voice' amongst a new generation of composers and opera directors. David Moss has performed worldwide in solo and theatre productions, from New York (Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center) to Venice (Teatro La Fenice) and the Brisbane Festival. In 1999 he received the Guggenheim Fellowship; in 1992 he was awarded a DAAD Fellowship in Berlin. Moss has worked with leading performers across a range of genres. He has sung with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle; and he made his debut at Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra. He performed twice as a soloist at the Salzburger Festspiele: in 1999 in Luciano Berio's Cronaca del Luogo and in 2001 as Prince Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss. He was a soloist in orchestral works by Heiner Goebbels and Helmut Oehring and he presented the Strange Stories Project at the Bern Biennial. Moss is artistic leader of the MADE Festival in Umeå, in Sweden, and co-founder and artistic leader of the Institute for Living Voice, which has since 2001 provided masterclasses, workshops and seminars internationally. Moss performs with the electronic trio Denseland and creates audio performances with the group Technologies.
