Pedro Coquenão is an Angolan-born, Lisbon-raised artist creating music, dance, radio, and visual and plastic arts under the alias Batida since 2007, although he also releases projects outside of the Batida alter ego. He is referred to as a game changer in the Afro-electronic scene.
His most recent release, Neon Colonialismo, came out in October 2022 and is his first personal album since 2014. A distinctly modern and vibrant project with its feet firmly rooted in the past, Batida combines samples from old 1970s Angolan tracks with modern electronic dance music. Whilst music is the starting point, through dance, graphics, photography, radio and video, Batida expands the reach of his project and takes on politics and social commentary within the ultimate goal of partying.
